Monsanto could get everything it wants for Christmas, unless we convince legislators this week to strip both the 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill (H.R. 5973) and the Farm Bill of dangerous riders that would give the biotech industry unprecedented power and immunity from not only an already-weakened review process, but also from federal law.
Here’s what’s at stake. Attached to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill (H.R. 5973) is the “Farmers Assurance Provision” (Section 733), which Monsanto convinced House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Kingston (R-GA) to attach to the original version. The rider, aptly renamed the “Monsanto Protection Act, is nothing more than a sneak attack on American farmers, consumers and the environment. If passed, it would give Monsanto immunity from federal law by allowing the biotech industry to plant genetically modified crops, even if a federal court has ordered the planting be halted until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed.

As citizens concerned for our future and the planet, we oppose subsidies for power-stations burning bio-liquid fuels. We agree with your own Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Sir John Beddington, who said, “Cutting down rainforest to produce biofuel crops is profoundly stupid.” So-called sustainability certificates are worthless because new demand causes new plantations. Subsidies for burning Biofuel crops make global warming worse, destroy tropical forests and endangered species, cause gross human rights abuses, raise world food prices, raise electricity bills to consumers and demonstrate that the government favours big-business over poor people. Germany and The Netherlands have seen sense and stopped these subsidies. Cancel them now.

Our friends over at TSA News have been documenting numerous cases of these abuses by the Transportation Security Administration:
** Detaining people simply because they can. The TSA detains people at whim. This is unlawful detention.
** Searching for or questioning passengers about anything other than WEI -- weapons, explosives, and incendiaries -- is expressly forbidden by law. The TSA is not allowed to search for or question you about money, drugs, immigration papers, or anything else. These are illegal searches.
** Groping people's genitals, including directly on the skin.
All of these TSA actions and others are heightening fear, promoting acceptance of racial profiling, and functioning in sync with a foreign policy that generates hatred, under the mistaken belief that giving up our rights will make us safe. Tell the TSA you reject these actions!

The Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi has chosen to design a "room" to be built around the Columbus statue in midtown Manhattan's Columbus Circle. He believes his choice of this statue is appropriate because, in his words, "Columbus discovered America." The project is expected to attract thousands of visitors. But will those visitors understand the legacy of the man being celebrated?

According to their estimates it will deafen more than 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more over the next 5 years. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. Your signature and comment will have to be included in the EIS and could stop this Naval program, potentially saving the lives of these ocean creatures. The comments must be in by July 10, 2012.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is ready to approve a new corn variety that is genetically modified by Dow Chemical to be resistant to the herbicide 2,4-D. This dangerous chemical was a major component of the herbicidal warfare program in Vietnam under the now infamous name of Agent Orange.
There is a large body of evidence indicating major health problems resulting from exposure to 2,4-D that include cancer, reproductive problems, neurotoxicity, and immunosuppression.
